Instructions and Precautions for Using Moxa Sticks

Instructions for Use

  1. Preparation: Select the appropriate acupuncture points based on your health condition or needs. Clean the area to be treated before starting.
  2. Lighting the moxa stick: Use a lighter or candle to ignite one end of the stick until it produces glowing embers.
  3. Positioning: Hold the lit moxa stick close to the acupuncture point (approximately 2–3 cm away) to warm the area without causing discomfort.
  4. Duration: Apply moxibustion for about 10 minutes per point or until the skin feels warm and slightly red.
  5. Extinguishing: Use a specialized moxa extinguisher or a fireproof container to safely extinguish the moxa stick.

Precautions

  1. Ventilation: Perform moxibustion in a well-ventilated room to prevent smoke accumulation.
  2. External Use Only:Moxa must not be ingested or inserted into the body in any way.
  3. Temperature control: Avoid direct contact with the skin and adjust the distance to prevent burns.
  4. Fire safety: Never leave a burning moxa stick unattended. Always ensure it is fully extinguished after use.
  5. Ash removal: Regularly scrape off ash from the burning end to prevent hot ash from falling and causing injury.
  6. Skin observation: Pay attention to the treated area. Stop immediately if you notice redness, swelling, or pain, and seek medical advice if necessary.
  7. Timing: Avoid using moxa sticks when extremely tired, hungry, or after overeating. Wait at least 30 minutes after meals.
  8. Post-treatment care: Do not touch cold water, bathe, or expose yourself to drafts for at least 4 hours after moxibustion.
  9. Focus during use: Avoid distractions like using a phone or watching TV while performing moxibustion to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  10. Storage: Store moxa sticks in a dry, fireproof container and keep them away from children.
  11. Timely Cleaning:Scrape off the ash from the burning end of the moxa stick every five minutes to prevent hot ash from falling and causing burns!

Proper adherence to these instructions and precautions ensures the safe and effective use of moxa sticks while minimizing risks.

Contraindicated Groups

The following groups should avoid using moxibustion to prevent adverse reactions:

  1. Pregnant women: Moxibustion may stimulate the uterus, making it unsuitable during pregnancy.
  2. Women during menstruation: Moxibustion may affect menstrual flow and the body's condition, so it is not recommended during this period.
  3. Patients with severe heart disease: Heat stimulation may cause discomfort or exacerbate the condition.
  4. Other special groups: People with bleeding disorders, high fever, allergic conditions, or undiagnosed diseases should consult a doctor to determine whether moxibustion is appropriate.
